Definition | A free sinking or rising multi-parameter probe equipped with high resolution temperature and current shear sensors for microstructure observations and precision CTD sensors for standard hydrography. The shear is measured by an aero-foil-shaped shear probe with an overall time constant of 4 ms. The high resolution temperature probe works with a Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) sensor which has an overall time constant of about 10 ms.The sampling rates of the sensors are about 1 kHz. An internal vibration sensor compensates for vibrations of the profiler itself. The data are transmitted via a fast link to a computer on the mother ship. The descent rate of the profiler can be adjusted to the surrounding water density by removable weights. The CTD sensors are a piezo-resistive pressure sensor, Platinum resistance thermometer and 7-Pole conductivity cell. The profiler was developed in the framework of the MICSOS project and is often called the 'MICSOS profiler'. The MST System consists of the profiler, a neutrally-buoyant cable for data transmission, a data and power supply interface, and a logger. Only 3 MST profilers were ever built. Meerestechnik Elektronik no longer exists but the instrument is supported by ISW Wassermesstechnik. | ||
