Definition | The Raytheon DSN-450 is a 200 KHz dual-axis, four beam Doppler speed log. The instrument simultaneously measures and displays ahead and astern speed, athwartship speed, distance travelled, and at continental shelf depths, an indication of water depth. The instrument is designed to aid the manoeuvring and docking of very large ships, providing a resolution of 0.1 knots at ship speeds above 10 knots, and a resolution of 0.01 knots at ship speeds below 10 knots when in mooring mode. The instrument utilises bottom and water-mass tracking technology, and features a depth indicator and adjustable depth alarm with a resolution of 0.33 feet in water depths of less than 250 feet. | |
