| Definition | This biotope often looks bare, with few large species present. Laminaria saccharina may be present, but always at low abundance. The biotope is characterised by relatively high abundances of the urchin Echinus esculentus and/ or brittlestars (Ophiocomina nigra or Ophiothrix fragilis). As a result of the high grazing pressure the rock surfaces look bare, though they are usually covered by coralline algal crusts with scattered tufts of various red and filamentous brown algae. Grazing molluscs may also be abundant in this biotope. | |
