Definition Sampling technique based on the free flow of analyte molecules or ions from the sampled medium to a receiving phase in a sampling device. Analytes concentrate on the collecting medium over time until they reach equilibrium with the surrounding medium. The use of passive sampling provides time-averaged concentrations of e.g. contaminants over the sampler's deployment period.
