Definition | A device used prior to the 1980s for obtaining a record of temperature against depth (strictly speaking, pressure) in the upper 300m of the ocean. The thermal element was a xylene-filled copper coil, which actuated a stylus through a Bourdon tube. The pressure element was a copper aneroid capsule that moved a smoked glass slide at right angles to the motion of the stylus. Data were usually distributed as enlarged photographs of the trace etched on the glass slide. | ||
